Orthoptists

Eyes are so amazing and complex - composed of more than 2 million working parts – the muscles that move the eye are the strongest relative to their size in the body.

ARE YOU A VISION CARE HERO – READY TO GIVE EYES THE ATTENTION THEY DESERVE?

CHOOSE Canterbury DHB where Orthoptists are a well recognised and established allied health profession, integral to the eye clinic. We specialise in diagnosis and management of eye movements and associated vision problems.

Our Consultants look to us for our technical ability, our specific training in eyes and for our advice. They really do trust us to do our job.

The role is expanding with Orthoptists taking the lead in a number of specialty areas – paediatrics and glaucoma assessment being two. We get to take responsibility for patient care.

Hospital jobs are the jewel in the crown – and at Canterbury you will get hospital experience immediately. You will be busy – we are the centre of excellence for the whole South Island. You will have variety and challenge, and did I mention you will be busy. The eye clinic has a high standard – a very good reputation – everyone is expert in their own field.

Professional development is encouraged and supported – but you will have to be self driven. Canterbury DHB support ongoing learning through attendance at symposiums and conferences. We have weekly clinical presentations and there are often research projects to be involved in.

As an Othoptist at Canterbury DHB you will be involved in:

  • Technical work – visual fields, biometry, optical coherence tomography (OCT), refraction, intraocular pressures (IOP), electrophysiology and orbscans – corneal topography.
  • Orthoptics – children, lazy eye, adults who have double vision, tensilon tests, registrar training

You don’t have to be registered to work here. There is a relatively young New Zealand professional association (New Zealand Orthoptic Society Incorporated) and we are strongly connected with the Australian professional association

Before you join our team – you had better hone up your cake baking skills – as it is customary to provide a cake on your birthday. We are a great team – a very multicultural team. Listen to what some of our staff have to say about working here (video of Jenny and Laura).
