Endocrinology and Diabetes

The Christchurch Endocrinology and Diabetes Service has three positions accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for advanced training in Endocrinology and Diabetes. One of the positions are for training specifically in diabetes and the others in general endocrinology including diabetes.

Christchurch has long been a centre of excellence for endocrinology training.

The department is based in the Christchurch hospital outpatient building built in 2018 with dedicated clinical and administration areas.

The service links with other specialty departments including neurosurgery where pituitary surgery is undertaken, endocrine surgery and radiology, The Endocrinology Service is supported by an excellent specialist laboratory (Endolab) which maintains close clinical links, and has a dedicated endocrinology testing unit with the outpatient clinic.

Thyroid service provides a radioiodine therapy (inpatient and outpatient), and a multidisciplinary thyroid cancer clinic.

The Obstetric Medicine service is jointly provided with Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Other specialist services include reproductive endocrinology clinic, metabolic bone clinic and bone density reporting. Clinical exposure to specialist lipid clinics is provided in conjunction with the lipid service. 

Canterbury DHB has New Zealand’s largest population of type 1 diabetes.  We offer multidisciplinary diabetes services, including outreach.  We have an adolescent diabetes service for patients 15-25 years old, and more than 200 patients on insulin pumps.

The service has a dedicated diabetes foot programme with specialist diabetes podiatry services with combined clinics with vascular surgery and Infectious diseases combined Charcot foot clinic with orthopaedics.

Consultants are Juliet Berkeley, Catherine Conway, David Cole, Steven Soule, Penny Hunt, Nilu Hewapathirana, Huan Chan, Christy Macdonald, Helen Lunt and Belinda Schouten. Many of the consultants also hold academic positions or joint appointments with general medicine. Dr Chan is also a lipid specialist
