Toni's Story

Is your career plan a blank page?

So many of us struggle to know what we want to do "when we grow up”. We are led to believe that we need to make this decision before we leave high school and we will be stuck with that decision for the rest of our lives.

Toni shows us that with an open mind, and hard work you don’t need to “know” you just need to start, and see where the opportunities take you, especially in a big organisation. Toni started at the CDHB as a social work student before taking up a permanent social worker position. From there she has made the most of the professional development opportunities available and completed post graduate training. She has moved through a mixture of clinical and non clinical roles, shorter hours after children, project work, longer hours, involvement in Mental Health, Older Person’s and Maori and Pacific Health.

Toni has worked in our Planning and Funding Team, an area she previously knew nothing about and had assumed would not interest her. But she has loved it, finding it utilised all the skills and experience she has gathered on her journey, enabling her to bring people together to design services for our region, services that are now being copied internationally.

Toni’s journey now continues, as she begins her now role as the General Manager for our Specialist Mental Health Services. From student to General Manager without having to leave the organisation. She never knew this is where her path would take her, she simply brought the skills she had and begun her journey. If your career plan is currently a blank page, maybe like Toni, the job you are waiting for is one you have never heard of, but maybe like Toni, if you bring us the skills you do have, they will take you on a path you will love.
