Considering Moving Here?

Health professionals are some of the most sought after people in New Zealand.  Midwives are part of an ever-increasing mobile global health care workforce.  Midwives that emigrate may work for the DHB as core midwives. People choose to work for the DHB for many reasons - the great lifestyle, the work/life balance, and it is a great way to learn about the New Zealand maternity care model and culture.

The Lead Maternity Carer model of primary maternity care is the cornerstone of the maternity service in New Zealand. CDHB promotes a close working partnership with Lead Maternity Carers. The community workforce is fully supported by CDHB with an orientation package to CDHB facilities and ongoing collaborative educational opportunities.

Midwives working in New Zealand are regulated by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand. The Council establishes the recertification requirements midwives need to gain a practising certificate.

The Midwifery Council of New Zealand now requires most overseas midwives to complete four online courses within two years of gaining registration. These courses provide midwives with a greater understanding and contextualisation of Midwifery practice in New Zealand and include New Zealand Maternity and Midwifery Systems, Pharmacology and Prescribing for Midwives, Examination of the Newborn for Midwives and Cultural Competence for Midwives.   These courses may also be beneficial for midwives undertaking a ‘Return to Practice’ programme.
