Cost of Living

One of the many questions about moving to New Zealand is - how much will my salary buy me?

It’s very hard to work out how much money you are going to need when you have no idea how much things will cost. Christchurch is relatively cheap to live compared to many of the main cities in the world, and cheaper than New Zealand’s other main cities, Auckland and Wellington.

You can find more information on the cost of living in New Zealand on the Immigration New Zealand website.

Banking

There are currently 17 banks registered in New Zealand. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has a list of all of these on their website at www.rbnz.govt.nz  These are well-established banks with a network of branches and ATM machines across the country.

Paying Tax

You will need an individual tax number from the New Zealand Inland Revenue Department (IRD) to pay tax in New Zealand. Click this link to go to the Inland Revenue website to find out more about how to apply for an IRD number. On this site you can also find out about income tax rates.
