Have you ever wondered where all the sterile equipment comes from in a hospital?

Sterile Services is an essential ‘behind the scenes’ service – we are the ones who decontaminate, pack and sterilise equipment for use in clinical areas. Theatres and wards can’t operate without us.

It is definitely not an office job – we never sit still. You have to be able to think on your feet, and multi task in this very fast paced work environment.

With an aging population, more theatres and more operations performed each day, Sterile Services is an area that is in demand.

Join us and you will join a great team – we really look out for each other andenjoy each others company

You will need to complete a course in Sterilising Technology through the Open Polytechnic within the first two years. We will support you to do this. Our own educator will work with you for the first 6-8 weeks on the job, and then you will be assigned an experienced team member as a buddy.

You have to have good communication skills as we support many teams within the hospitals.

We are always looking at ways to improve – we welcome change. Recently we engaged in a lean thinking exercise – in our theatre sterilising unit. We changed our layout – improved the work flow and minimised waste.

Our service operates 7 days a week, with 8 hour shifts between the hours of 6.30am – 12.00am. Our busiest time is 1pm – 9.30pm so of course we have a higher staffing ratio during this time.

Our staff have come from many walks of life – we even have a pilot, an ex army medic and a vet nurse. Once in the job people tend to stay, or sometimes they go on to take up other roles within health – Canterbury DHB is a big place, we are the biggest employer in the South Island.

Whether you want to join as a trainee or you are an experienced Sterile Services Technician - CHOOSE CANTERBURY.
