How we transformed the Canterbury Health system

View Our New Way of WorkingWe knew several years ago that if we continued to deliver services in the same way, by 2020 Canterbury would need to double its workforce and physical capacity. 'Business as usual' was not, and is not, a sustainable option.

For the last three years we have been transforming the way we design, deliver and fund health services - reorientating the Canterbury health system around the needs of the individual and removing traditional barriers to improve outcomes for our population.

Our transformation is based on the collective vision of one health system focused on providing 'the right care and support, to the right person, at the right time and in the right place.' This transformation meant that not only did we survive the Canterbury earthquakes, but that we are now leading the world in innovative, integrated health care systems across primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Quality Improvement & Innovation Awards

A big part of the Canterbury Way of Working is that we encourage ideas to come from anyone. One of the ways this is done is through our Quality Awards, which recognise and reward the excellent quality improvement and innovative initiatives, both large and small, taking place throughout the Canterbury Health System.
