Laboratories
Canterbury Health Laboratories is one of the largest and leading medical diagnostic reference laboratories in New Zealand.
Join the medical specialty concerned with the study of the nature and causes of diseases. This underpins every aspect of medicine, from diagnostic testing and monitoring of chronic diseases to cutting-edge genetic research and medical diagnostic technologies; 60-70% of all clinical decisions are based on what comes out of the lab.
Our scope of tests is one of the largest in New Zealand - we are the leading edge in a rapidly changing world – many tests are only performed at Canterbury Health Laboratories.
Why choose Canterbury Health Laboratories?
Choose A Career In Science
CHL represents all medical diagnostic science disciplines, and has several whole floors of scientists working in their specialty areas, as well our own custom designed building opposite one of the busiest ED's in the Southern Hemisphere. We are one of two reference laboratories in New Zealand which means we do some of the more specialised or complex testing, meaning more science for us!
First To Make A Difference
Join us as part of a team who pride themselves on being at the cutting edge of medical laboratory science. We pride ourselves on being early adopters and making sure we are the first to make a difference.
Our firsts are endless and all focused on making sure we continue to provide the most accurate and useful tests to those who need them, namely the patients, and the specialists treating them.
Come And Join Us
There are lots of people to get to know when you join us - we have around 400 staff at Canterbury Health Laboratories.
Barbeques in the courtyard, market days, family days and helping us support charities by participating in events like Loud Shirt Day and SPCA cupcake day are great ways to get to know us. Or you could join the team for the CHLabs touch rugby competition. Our annual calendar is world famous (within the Canterbury Health System), so if you are a keen photographer you can enter the competition to have your photo as part of the calendar.
Cutting Edge Research
With so many scientists in one space, we can't help but want to push the boundaries. Many of our talented staff are leading our own research, and we also work with universities and clinical study groups to provide vital lab services for their research. We are heavily involved in the VIDARIS and PERCH international research studies, and publish papers in medical journals internationally.

Canterbury Health Laboratories is the largest medical laboratory in the South Island, operating from modern, well equipped facilities opposite Christchurch Hospital. In addition it operates smaller laboratories at Christchurch Woman's, Burwood, The Princess Margaret and Ashburton Hospital.
Leading The Way In Technology
CHL lead the way in technological advances regularly modernising our analysers and often being the first to introduce new diagnostic tools in New Zealand, and sometimes even the Southern Hemisphere.
Our team were the first to start using automated urinalysis (IRIS), and mass spectrometry for bacteria identification (MALDITOF). We were the first to move to automated cervical screening (Focal Point), first to adopt digital haematology (CELLIVISION), and continue to be at the forefront of moving specialist testing methods onto our automated machines in our core laboratories to increase disease detection and health monitoring capabilities.
We could list all the machines we were the first to use or first to adopt, but the list is much too long and changing far too often........
