Social Workers in the CDHB form an integral part of the multidisciplinary team in whatever sector we choose to work – and there is plenty of choice!
The range of social work practice opportunities includes acute hospital care, rehabilitation services, community work and mental health. We work across 5 different hospitals where there is always support and opportunity to learn from others in the team. Regular supervision is provided to you wherever you work.
CDHB requires that social workers, like all other allied health professionals, achieve registration. There is plenty of help and support to assist you to achieve this. Your professional supervisor will advise and help you through the process, and colleagues who have “been there and done that” are always ready to lend a hand.
You will find a genuine commitment within the CDHB to enable you to grow in your professional practice. There are great opportunities for training, professional development, supervision and self-improvement and you will be encouraged and enabled to access these. There is the opportunity to move into leadership,
management and quality roles as well. Social workers from the CDHB often represent their department or service on community based working groups to develop policies or represent a client group’s needs to funding bodies like the Government.
Social workers new to the mental health and addiction environment are supported through a programme that provides a practice-centred curriculum to help them develop confidence and effective clinical practice in this challenging environment: through the New Entry to Specialist Practice programme.
We play an active role in training social work students and you will have the opportunity to share your growing expertise and knowledge in training another competent social worker. We take students from the University of Canterbury, CPIT, Otago University, and sometimes from other campuses.
CDHB IS AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF CHANGE. Our recent earthquakes have sped up the change process. There is a lot happening – we are proactively innovativeand introducing a lot of programmes aimed at a new model of health care delivery. You will have an opportunity to be part of this change.
